The article deals with particular characteristics of Gogol's petersburg myth, specificity of the author's perception of the metropolitan reality and its reflection in the writer’s work; and for analysis are taken not only five of the petersburg novels, but also "the Night before Christmas", a lyrical etude "1834", "Petersburg notes 1834". Gogol’s deep mythology of artistic thinking and extremely complex syncretism, specific Gogol’s mythologization phenomena of the metropolitan reality with universal mythopoetic schemes, which the writer used intuitively through his folklore worldview (the impossibility of delimitation the natural and the supernatural, the presence of the mystical elements, metaphoricity, emotional and sensual-concrete character of the represented world) are analyzed.
