The article’s concern is Ukrainian national audience with special emphasis on youth readership segment. It outlines the complex picture of current national readerships; shows some significant reader tastes and preferences; clarifies preferences to the modern Ukrainian literature, including in terms of young readers. The article considers practices of young Ukrainian reader audience. The youth audience is segmented according to its inclusion to reader practice, readers’ interest and genre preferences. The criteria by which youth selects fiction mostly belong to foreign belles-lettres; while Ukrainian literature plays role of the “national” or “local” fiction. Only one segment of readers selects the Ukrainian fiction deliberately, it is “expert” readers. Even though its admirers are not numerous, but they are the most active segment or readers. Language of the text (Ukrainian or Russian) isn’t main selection criteria for most of young readers. There are some of the most popular Ukrainian authors who are well-known among young people. These findings can reinforce the foundation of effective operating in the modern Ukrainian field of fiction.
