Abstract

As the title implies the article describes semantic differentiation of basic concept of national self-consciousness by students. One of the main factors determining the process of democratic development of the state is the formation of the national consciousness of its young citizens. The article deals with semantic component of national self-consciousness. The basic concept of national self-consciousness is the nation. Semantic characteristics of self-consciousness are investigated by the method of semantic differential. Psychosemantic approach considers social consciousness by studying the value-semantic sphere of its subjects. The partial semantic differential by Lozova O.M. was used. Students were asked to evaluate the nation in 23 pairs of adjunctive antonyms, such as pleasant-unpleasant, native-foreign, friendly-enemy and others. The characteristic features of the semantic differentiation of "nation" by students of the northern, southern, western and eastern regions of Ukraine are described. From the results it is concluded that there is a common and a difference in semantic differentiation of basic concept of national selfconsciousness by students. A general tendency towards a positive assessment of nation is revealed. The specific factors were identified: Happiness to be free, Integrity, Femininity (psychosemantic features of respondents from the northern region of Ukraine), Naturalness (psychosemantic feature of respondents from the southern region of Ukraine), Mind and Youth (psychosemantic feature of respondents from the eastern region of Ukraine), Sincerity (psychosemantic feature of respondents from the western region of Ukraine). The factors that are the same for several groups are identified: Masculinity and Proximity are present in the factorial assessment of respondents from the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine; Simplicity is present in the factorial assessment of the respondents from the southern and northern regions of Ukraine; the Nobleness is found in the factorial assessment of respondents from the eastern and western regions of Ukraine.
