Abstract

The article investigates the medial and alternative voice constructions of the Gothic language. The problem of the evolution of the category of voice in the old Germanic languages, including the Gothic language, is one of acutely controversial. The purpose of the article was to study the typology of creation and use of voice constructions of the Gothic language. The main objective was the isolation of typological characteristics in the category of voice of the Gothic language. The author made an attempt to investigate and reconstruct the development of the category of voice of the Gothic language. As mediopassive paradigma of the Gothic language was imperfect, the category of voice had to be filled, except for the classic (mediopassive),with alternative voice constructions (copula+participle II, constructions with verbs of the IVth class).
