Abstract

The article dwells upon the peculiarities of two books of travel stories published in 1930-sth: “The people of Bilomorbud” by Pavlo Usenkoand “Karelia-Karjala” by Ivan Bahmut, which focus on Karelia. The first of these books is only symbolic of the time: it provides a general view of the building of Baltia-Belomor channel under the rule of Communist party leaders and repressive institutions. The book by I.Bahmut is an example of careful detailed analysis of the geography, climate and natural resources of Karelia, as well as the issues of language, culture and daily life of its people. Yet, here we can also come across political prejudices and the rhetoric is influenced by official line of the Communist party.
