Abstract

The article deals with the comparative semantics of the lexemes denoting white and black in different cultures of the countries across the world. The author analyses the notion of the lexical unit “colour”, investigates the etymology of the two colours names – white and black, the peculiarities of their colour designations, convergence and divergence of their meanings, symbols, associations, and also the use of in different spheres of the society’s life activities in accordance with the cultural and sociolinguistic factors.
