This article is aimed at describing interactive teaching advantages. In order to encourage their students to speak, foreign language teachers create role-plays, which are more enjoyable activity in promoting students’ speaking skills. Role-plays in the language learning classroom have been around for many years in many formats. Role-plays have been a motivational tool for students because they allow them to be creative and express themselves. The arrangement of the «Replacement Performance» role-play is analised. The author defines the set of its rules and basic stages. Firstly, the real-life situation chosen for the role-play should require a decision to be made or an opinion to be expressed. In the «Replacement Performance» role-play students are naturally engaged in the process. Secondly, the scene needs to be simple and should not last more than ten minutes. The students view a scene which initiates discussion among them. Thirdly, they are encouraged to change the outcome of the scene acted out by the other students or presented on a videotape. Depending on how the replacement character role is performed and what the character says, the scene can advance in different directions. It becomes a type of improvisation for the foreign language learners. Students have to respond to on-the-spot changes in the dialogue. Such interactive activity becomes a great practice both in problem solving skills in general and in choosing appropriate, specific language that can be applied in real-life situations. It is important for the teacher to predict students’ grammar and lexical mistakes and to train some grammar structures especially interrogative sentences beforehand. The benefits of using role-plays are mentioned: getting less talkative students to speak in class, improving communicative competence and fluency, promoting interactive cooperative learning and team work. The article focuses on the importance of this activity in the development of students’ foreign language communicative competence. Several examples of real life situations for the «Replacement Performance» role-play are provided. Educational, upbringing and methodical significance of this role-play are emphasized. The further research perspectives are outlined.
