Abstract
The works of representatives of St. Volodymyr University Historians’ Scientific School Mykola Kostomarov "Slavic Mythology" and Ivan Lashnyukov "Essays on Russian historiography and history" as spokesmen of populist direction in the historiography are analyzing in the article. The article is examining how Mykola Kostomarov and Ivan Vishnyakov understood the task and the purpose of a national historian and a historical science and what they put into these concepts.
