Abstract

Thesis for a Candidate Degree in Philology, Speciality 10.02.04 – Germanic Languages. – Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University, Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. – Kyiv, 2015. The thesis focuses on the study of invariant and variant features of the “editor’s word” media genre within the framework of the communicative-functional approach. It provides the analysis of the “editor’s word” media genre compositional, linguo stylistic, strategic and tactic aspects. In the paper, the “editor’s word” media genre is viewed as an independent syncretic genre of the glossy magazine discourse, which synthesizes the features of analytical and publicistic journalistic genres. It is influenced by media linguistic personality and functions in the mass media discourse. The distinguishing features of the genre embrace the infotainment goal, the editor’s authorship, the female audience addressee and a set of invariant and variant compositional, linguo stylistic, strategic and tactic particularities. The invariant features are constituted by those unvaried lingual aspects, which are constantly repeated in all media texts analyzed. The variant genre features are determined by the addresser factor and constitute quantitative and qualitative differences of the specified invariant features. The invariant compositional peculiarities of the genre comprise six functional semantic blocks. The invariant linguo stylistic features are reflected in the use of phonetic, graphic, lexical and syntactic expressive means and stylistic devices. The invariant strategic and tactic peculiarities are determined by the use of the basic self-presentation strategy realized in its verbal (direct and indirect) and non-verbal tactics. The data analysed with the help of the statistical “chi-squared” test support the idea that the maximum quantitative variation within the genre is registered in the use of expressive means and stylistic devices. The medium quantitative variation is registered in the use of verbal (direct and indirect) and non-verbal tactics of the genre basic self-presentation strategy. The minimal quantitative variation is registered in the composition of the media genre.
