Abstract

This dissertation is the first one in the Ukrainian literary science that presents a systematic and conceptual research on the literary heritage of Ivan Yatskanyn, a contemporary Ukrainian writer in Slovakia. The author traced cultural and historical backgrounds of Ukrainian prose in Slovakia on the brink of centuries. This paper proposes a periodization of the literary process of the late 80s of the 20thcentury and 10s of the 21st century. The thesis comprehends for the first time facets of the writer’s creative activity: writer, literary criticist, editor and translator. The writer’s ideological orientations, evolution of his creative thinking were reviewed through the prism of genre, problem, thematic, and stylistic particularity of his fiction. The paper accentuates on the author’s introduction of rural themes into flash fiction where the main character is the peasant mentality bearer, with the prevalence of spiritual constants of his native area. The major archetypes among them are those of land and houses, relationship with the family and national roots. The author described for the first time the problem of personal identification in the works written by Ivan Yatskanyn that are closely intertwined with the loss of kinship and national identity. This problem is associated with the type of rural character that carries memories about his native place, therefore his soul is split and his life is in disharmony. The gap between the country and the city causes a sense of frustration since the characters have no roots, soil so they feel themselves insecure and alienated. In addition, the author of the paper discussed the problems of the novel "Angel over the city" and traced the poetics of its title for the first time too. In Ivan Yatskanyn’s creative evolution the respondent ascertained the writer’s visible movement towards philosophical content, absorption into existential and anthropological issues. It was found that the works of I. Yatskanyn are characterized by peculiar existential attitude in tragic form. The analysis of existential problems in the writer’s prose allowed to highlight the key existentials of the writer’s loneliness, escape, death and love. In the psychoanalytic key we analysed suicidal motives present in stories. Among the basic dominants of the author’s writing style the respondent highlighted its extraordinary lyricism, attention to details, emphasized poetics of neorealism as the dominant of his artistic writing. The respondent came to the conclusion that I. Yatskanyn’s creative heritage takes a place of honour in the modern Ukrainian literature of Slovakia presenting it as a distinct branch of the Ukrainian community. The author also concluded that this creative heritage is an organic part of the Ukrainian literary process and clarifies its key trends and deserves attention and recognition.
