Abstract

The thesis presents a comprehensive analysis of the prose by Nina Bichuіa from the standpoint of its narrative structure. The research defines the individual narrative strategies as an evidence of the author’s originality and experimentation in the context of Ukrainian literary and artistic coordinates of 60s – 80s of the twentieth century. While the literature of that time is marked by party dogmas and static narrative tactics; the innovative type of N. Bichuia’s writing is characterized by psychological insight, intellectual tension, elegance and aesthetics, swiftness of author imagination. Realistic image becomes a signature of the author’s writing. The thesis gives theoretical and methodological review of the basic narrative concepts and typologies in propinquity to the text; finds the place of Nina Bichuia’s prose in a literary discourse. It also determines the primary and secondary narrative types in the epic texts; characterizes an artistic narrative of history in Bichuia's interpretation; discovers the textual forms of organization of the prose that are explicitly used by the author. The research analyses the chronotope as a means of narrative modeling; differentiates Bichuia’s narrative strategies of the narrative manner. The writer’s narrative tactics of prose was comprehended through a complex configuration of mixed and variable narration, binary conceptual types, communicative triad of «narrator – author – narratаtor». The object of the research is the prose by Nina Bichuia that was written and published during 1960s –1980s and republished in 1990s – 2010s. The analysis resulted in introduction to narrative instruments of the concepts of mixed and variable narration, a bifurcated narrator, and to the individual and stylistic features of writing the concepts of fragmentation, synchronicity, declarativity, plot compactedness, text unevenness, autocomment. The narrative manner of Nina Bichuia’s prose was presented by mixed and variable narrative types that evolved from a third person narration in the early works with school, teenager and philosophical theme to a combination of homodiegetic and heterodiegetic narrator. In the process of the story sometimes appears an extradiegetic narrative strategy, the image of a bifurcated narrator in the historical, humanistic and philosophical works. The most original narrative strategies are shown in small prose genres, in which Nina Bichuia uses mixing and blending of different narrative levels in short event-indicative lines. Homodiegetic narrator dominates in the author’s prose, he occupies the position of internal or external focalization on the depicted from the point of view of the first person. Usually it is a woman-narrator, self-absorbed, closed from the outer world, internally focused on other characters that appear in the works. The prevalence of the homodiegetic narrative in Bichuia’s works explains the large number of unsaid fragments, internal monologues, dialogues with inner «I», thereby forming a closed Inarrator psychological type. Among the textual forms of narrative organization of the studied texts the analysis singles out the following: a) intertextuality, which reveals explicit and implicit methods of introducing «borrowed» words into the text; b) a narrative of colors as an important means of transmitting visual art information that stands as an indicator of emotional and psychological climate in the works; c) descriptiveness, that is characterized by superficial, «external» illustration of events and characters, plot elements in which are placed after each other; d) detailazation, that demonstrates an accurate reproduction of the depicted with the help of artistic details (portrait, landscape, interior, symbol, etc).; e) assembling, by which the narrator rapidly changes events in the work. Nina Bichuia’s individual narrator strategies are fragmentation, synchronicity, declarativity, plot compactedness, text unevenness, autocomment.
