Abstract
The article deals with the analysis of unstable identity of characters in V.Hzhytsky‘s “The Black Lake” novel. The studies by E.Said (the concept of Orientalism), H.Bhabha (colonial mimicry ideas), E.Thompson (the proposal to consider the literature of the peoples of the former Russian and Soviet Empire as a postcolonial one) are the article methodological base. The author of the article calls in question the lack of the postcolonial discourse in Ukrainian literature of the twentieth century and shows that the characters in “The Black lake” novel as well as it’s author feel that they simultaneously belong to different cultures, identifying themselves both with colonized and colonizers. The feature of the novel is the fact that colonization has not simple meaning: the advance of Russians outside their ethnic territories in order to establish their power has quite negative treatment, while the spread of Western civilization is seen as progress. The author of the novel makes attempt to destroy civilization authority of the Russians but asserts the Western way of life as a commonly acceptable. Unstable identity representation makes to regard the novel in the wider framework than literature of protest against foreign oppression. New ideas and images forces to raise the question of the novel place in the 1920s literature canon and its actualization in modern times reassessment of relations between the people of the former USSR.
