Abstract
The article reveals that the background of discourse analysis in linguistics was formed in the early XXth century by the traditions of the USA ethnolinguistic school, which was founded by F. Boas. It was defined that the key aspects of the research of discourse analysis, namely the recognition of the importance of the social role of language, the peculiarities of its functioning in society, and the necessity to take into account such extra-linguistic factors as spatial and time contexts, can be traced in the works of famous European scientists of XIXth century W. von Humboldt, J. von Herder.
