Abstract
The article is devoted to an essential problem of modern semiotics and musicology, i.e. the interaction of verbal and nonverbal as a sense-generating factor in an artwork. Three artistic renditions of T. Mann’s famous novella “Death in Venice”, all different in genre, (a motion picture, a ballet, an opera and its stage version) are analyzed to expose peculiarities of realization of musical potential of a literary text. For each of the versions semantic fields are outlined. Intertextual connections between the B. Britten’s opera and other constituents of the “Death in Venice” metatext are shown.
