Abstract
The article addresses various linguistic paradigms within which idioms have been traditionally studied. The paper focuses on linguo-cultural, psycho-cognitive, comparative and structural-semantic aspects of phraseology. As a result of analysis of various approaches towards idioms and considering the above-mentioned aspects of tackling them we have coined the terms social phraseology or sociophrasemics, theophrasemics. Theophrasemics demonstrates universal nature of idiomatic construals in languages of diverse structural organization. The nature of theophrasemics is addressed via the study of its micro-systemic component, that being a bulk of idioms containing the designation of God. Considering the lingual code a carrier of epistemological information, we address the respective proper names as manifestations of specific national character. Thus the idioms containing the name of God demonstrate ethnic peculiarities of conceptualizing and verbal encoding of God’s individual and social significance. The idioms under study that correspond with folk beliefs demonstrate a heavy impact of Christian values. Idiomatic constructions in Ukrainian, English and Spanish demontrate similar structural and semantic features. We interpret the similarities in their structure and stylistic potential in terms of socio-phraseology’s international character.
