Abstract

The purpose of the dissertation research is to study, systemize and generalize neo-mythological discourse in H. Pahutiak’s literary prose. The paper traces coherence and continuance of neo-mythologism, comparing the writer’s prose to the texts of the representatives of English literature and some Ukrainian authors. It finds out typological parallels in their works and in H. Pahutiak’s fiction. The writer manifests her creative individuality in the genre forms of historical-mythological and gothic novels, fantasy and philosophical-fantastic novelettes. The main themes of H. Pahutiak’s works are ontological-anthropological and cultural-historical ones. The author’s spiritual-biographic experience mainly manifests itself in the form of auto-biographical markers. Concentrated mythologism is a style dominant of her prose. In her short prose H. Pahutiak reactualizes the archaic senses, reinterpreting the modern spiritual phenomena in the context of eternity. The mythologems of Urizh, home, three pear trees, the garden, the black bird, the setting sun, the River, the island and the Boater make it possible to appeal to mythical precedents. H. Pahutiak interprets cosmogonic and eschatological myths, mythological motifs of longing for paradise, journey, temptation, allowing for deepening into the areas of collective unconscious. In the dilogy «The Scribe of the Eastern Gate of the Shelter» and «The Scribe of the Western Gate of the Shelter» the main neo-mythological strategy is opposing the Shelter topos to the traditional mythologems with the semantics of «the land of eternal bliss». The originality of the neo-myth in the dilogy «The Kingdom» and «The Book-carriers from the Kingdom» manifests itself in contaminating gothic and comic features in the other world images and creating the author’s demonology according to mythological schemes. In H. Pahutiak’s novels «The Servant from Dobromyl» and «The Magnate» the plots evolve according to the archetypal principle which consists in modeling a neo-myth by the scheme of individuation. The features of neo-mythologism in «The Servant from Dobromyl» become apparent in embodying the functions of a culture hero in the dhampir character. In «The Magnate» the neo-myth is modeled according to the scheme of individuation – the development of S. Nyklovskyi from the Shadow to the Persona. The originality of the writer’s mythological thinking in the novel «Urizh gothic» manifests itself in structurizing the literary world by means of archaic oppositions. The object of mythologization in «The Sunset in Urizh» is routine scenarios of marital life. The wild woman archetype is embodied in the narrator. Its interaction with other mythologems drives the plot, its background being the neo-myth of Urizh. The peculiarities of the reception of mythology in «The Enchanted Musicians» are determined by its synthetic genre variety. The distinctive feature of this novel is filling the images representing the mythologems of primordial elements with spiritual semantics. These mythologems are also originally interpreted in «Yuliia’s and Herman’s Dreams».
