Abstract
The problem of criteria has become the mostimportant issue in the crisis of historical sciences. The universal and anthropological principles can only form the basis of the history of Modern World Literature. The author gives us an opportunity to use and analyze the ideas of the Canadian scientist, Nortop Frye - his theory of modus in particular. The method of this kind, which was put into practice of studying Ukrainian literature of the XIX-XXth centuries, defines the four key modi: comedy, romance, tragedy and irony. At the same time it shows the immanent peculiarity of the development of literature with its periods and cyclicity. Some literature facts witness the evolution of the qualitative features of the leading modi or the ascent of these modi to the marginal level. So, historiography of Ukrainian literature may be systematized on the new standpoint
