Abstract

The versatility of the motive of travel, the possibility of its different interpretations has always attracted writers. The purpose of this article is to identify the main types of «routes» of lyrical hero based on the analysis of the works by Ukrainian poets of late modernism; to consider the connection of dominant types with aesthetic applications of its creators; to outline the functions of the motive of travel. Ukrainian Literary Studies is yet to have a research dedicated to highlighting implement features and functionality of the «road map» of lyrical hero of that era. The review of Ukrainian poetry of 1920-1930‘s allows a conclusion about different types of «routes» of lyrical hero based on dichotomies such as «mine – another‘s», «external – internal», «real – unreal», «real – false/culturologic», «present – past», «present – future» etc. Among the defining styles of high modernism – symbolism (D. Zagul), neoclassical (M. Zerov, M. Rylskyi, Yuri Klen), neoromantic (O. Vlyzko) – dominate different distinctive «routes» due to their aesthetic programs and benchmarks. In addition to implementing the adventure aspect, this motif initiates such topics as learning of the world by a lyrical hero, testing the inner strength, or searching for alternative reality or present and others. Thus it changes the functional range of the motive of travel from the traditional form of the reader‘s horizon expanding and initiation of a lyrical hero to the author‘s myth creation and saving escapism after of the «block» on Ukrainian literature. Therefore, the «road map» of the lyrical hero is presented by the «routes» that both fit in the paradigm of world traditions and the paradigm of national and individual author‘s artistic experience.
