Abstract

Dmitriy Bantysh-Kamensky made a significant contribution to the development of historical, archival, and documentary studies. Moreover, he prepared and published a great number of scientific works, which comprise his historical legacy. Russian historiography does not include even a short description of Bantysh-Kamensky’s life and scientific activity. The scholar came from the dynasty with Moldavian origins. Dmitriy was very well educated thanks to his father’s care, which provided an opportunity to study several foreign languages. Furthermore, Dmitriy was acquainted with the basics of diplomacy and ambassadorial correspondence. These outstanding skills gave him a chance to begin his career at Moscow archive of the Collegium of Foreign Affairs. Simultaneously, Bantysh-Kamensky began to publish his first scientific works and successfully held a diplomatic activity in chancellery of the military governor of Ukraine Prince Repnin. In 1825, he was appointed as civil governor of city Tobolsk. Bantysh-Kamensky fulfilled his responsibilities thoroughly, putting much effort in the improvement of public services, which significantly increased the income of the city. Nonetheless, Dmitriy was eliminated from his position and was forced to fight for his honorable name for a long time. After that, he concentrated on the scientific work as a historian and archivist. The pages of Dmitriy Bantysh-Kamensky’s biography reconstruct the image of the educated and talented personality of the 1st half of XIX century whose life path was full of the significant events for the Russian empire. His public and political views possessed breadth, courage and independence, and his biography by itself clearly speaks about his democratic and humanistic pursuits.
