Abstract

The article analyzes the organizational and educational activity of the Ukrainian soldiers of the 1st Zaporizhzhya T. Shevchenko regiment on Podlasie in 1917 – early 1918, the formation of which was initiated in the camp of the captured Ukrainians of the russian army Rastatt (Germany). Reproduction of the peculiarities of the service of the Ukrainian soldiers of the 1st Zaporizhzhya T. Shevchenko regiment as a part of the stage division of the German army in the territory of German-occupied Ukrainian lands and the definition of their achievements in the development of a national school in the city of Bila and its district. Thanks to the activities of the Ukrainian soldiers of the 1st Zaporizhzhya T. Shevchenko regiment in the town of Bila on Podlasie, a national school was introduced and the influence of Russian imperial ideology is considerably weakened. Ukrainian camp community «Independent Ukraine» tried to maximally support its Scythians from the regiment, providing them with material and moral assistance. In turn, the soldiers gained organizational experience and knowledge, which were needed to build their own army and national state institutions. The Ukrainian camps of Wezler and Salzwedel took part in the acquisition of this Ukrainian division. The organizing and educational work of Ukrainian soldiers was provided by Colonel Zaporozhian Sich of Rashatt camp Mykola Shapoval. In order to prepare this article, archival documents stored in the Central State Archives of the supreme bodies of power and administration of Ukraine in Kyiv were used, which to date have not been largely introduced to scientific circulation. Organizing and educational work enabled the founding of 153 Ukrainian elementary schools in the city of Bila on Podlasie, as well as hundreds of small bookshops, which made it possible to significantly increase the Ukrainian influence in this region.
