Abstract

The beginning of the 21st century is characterized by the tendency towards a steady and substantial increase in the number of new loan-words (viewed as a peculiar kind of innovations “boom”), which enter the lexicon mainly through the mass media discourse and have not been sufficiently analysed so far in modern Ukrainian studies. Therefore, a scrupulous research of complex lexical-and-semantic processes occurring in modern Ukrainian as a result of language contacts remains rather urgent and necessary. In view of this, the author collected over 300 new loan-words as well as contexts of their usage. The article analyses extra- and intralingual factors and main sources of new loan-words occurrence. Among the latter the author singles out the mass media discourse, in which Anglicisms and Americanisms dominate (about 80–82 %), while the borrowings from Italian, French, Spanish and Japanese represent a smaller amount (18–20 %). New loan-words typical of the analysed period have mostly enriched the following thematic groups of vocabulary: scientific-and-technical, physical education and sports, economic, social-andpolitical, culture and art, tourism, advertising, everyday life. The collected and thoroughly analysed material from the mass media discourse testifies that the majority of new loan-words are of a bookish nature, including, in particular, special lexemes of various terminology systems, among which internationalisms and Europeanisms prevail. It is also found out that conversational and slang lexical units are less frequent. The article also identifies cases of redundant unnecessary occurrences of borrowings due to having better correspondences in the national language as well as points to the unjustified use of barbarisms in a foreign language graphical presentation. It is also noted that the beginning of the 21st century is characterized by the phenomenon of rapid penetration of a considerable number of exoticisms into the mass media discourse and subsequently into the literary language.
