Abstract
The article singles out lingua-stylistic suggestions of using Ukrainian long known lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” while analysing the history of formation of their lexical meanings, traditional and innovative practice of the use of lexemes in different functional fields. The analysis includes words that are similar in both meanings and pronunciation. The article focuses upon different types of dictionaries and reference books of Ukrainian language culture and stylistics, texts of individual monuments of Ukrainian language. The review of etymology, origin and features of using lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” in linguistic practice of Ukrainians results in the development of meanings and functional stylistic coloring in the usage of these units. In speakers’ consciousness may be the relics of early meanings and the usage of lexemes in such meanings leads to the violation of Ukrainian language norms. Incorrect usage may be subjective: lexeme “cмисл (meaning)” like borrowing from Russian, lexeme “сенс (sense)” like borrowing from Latin and scientific term. Lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” are used as synonyms, but there are specific fields of meanings where they cannot be interchanged: lexeme “сенс (sense)” should be used when it comes to reasonable grounds for something, lexeme “cмисл (meaning)” should be used when it comes to notion, concept, understanding.
