Abstract
The article highlights the importance of studying the historical morphology of the Ukrainian language because of the need to reveal the causes of the development of phonemic modifications of morphemes for a through study of interconnections between the elements of the grammatical structure. The article identifies the nature, regularity and functional load of one of the most common morphological phenomena — alternation of velar with hushing and whistle consonants. The specificity of alternation and its regularities are found in the processes of nominal, verbal inflection and word formation based on the text materials of the second half of the 16th — 18th centuries. During this time the Ukrainian literary language was formed and there was a gradual transition to the national literary norms. Texts of formal, literary and popular-scientific styles, in which live folk speech is fully reflected, are collected for analysis. The total volume of analyzed texts is about 3,000 word forms.
