Abstract
The portrait genre of the end of the ХХ – the beginning of the XXI centuries has been investigated in the article. The evolution of artistic portrait as a special form of cognition of man, in which the social, aesthetic, ethic, philosophical ideas about an individual in the history of culture are expressed, is considered. The author of the article is primarily interested in the exposure of facts and formulation of principles, that entailed the changes in the interpretation of the image of a man in the portraiture of the new century. The review of the works of European artists of the ХХІ century is given. The special attention is paid to the study of the features of the portraits painted by the artists of independent Ukraine
