Abstract
The article is largely about the background of to-date historical linguistics. It tackles the fundamental issues of language change and variability of linguistic units developed by the prominent researchers of the XIX-XX centuries. The aim of the article is to encourage a view of to-date insights in linguistic science as emerging from and implicated in a complex and fruitful background, suggesting within its framework the basics of diachronic linguistic theory. Under special scrutiny are the key issues of historical linguistics, namely, the analogy principle and structural pressure being the main mechanisms of language change.
