Abstract

The article explores the peculiarities of meta-language reflection on the process of semiosis and the nature of linguistic signs in the short prose by A. Sodomora. The focus is made on the meta-language considerations of the philologist and translator, explicated in the literary text, without application of the principles of linguistic methodology and epistemology, which causes particular way of understanding semiotic-representative features of linguistic signs. Some attention is focused on a kind of symbiosis of the sign's epistemic and ontological aspects, subject to the aesthetic aims of the literary text. The article demonstrates the unity of three dimensions of the semiosis process (semantics, syntactics and pragmatics) as an object of the author's meta-language reflection. In most cases, the sign pragmatics is considered by A. Sodomora within comprehension of translation problems, with an emphasis on intercultural and interlingual asymmetry, different connotations of the sign, various meanings to be actualized when the signs are combined in speech. It is noted that the linguistic sign is interpreted as the inseparable unity of the signifier and the signified. The emphasis is made on the author's search for the external and internal motive of the linguistic sign, which refutes its arbitrary nature. The conclusion goes on the fact, that the icon-signs are most frequent to become the object of the meta-language reflection in the literary prose by A. Sodomora. The author's attention paid to the existence of a sign in the past, which is in an effort to „reanimate” the connection between the signifier and the signified, is compared with the conventional nature of the linguistic signs in everyday communication and, as a consequence, the transformation of most icons and indexes into symbol-signs. The active meta-language reflection over semantics, syntactics and pragmatics of linguistic signs within different linguocultural codes in synchronic and diachronic dimensions is defined as one of the peculiarities of A. Sodomora's idiolect.
