Abstract
The article describes the substantive characteristics of the leading definitions of the study. The concept of pupils' reading competence is revealed, and reading is described as a receptive type of speech activity. Emphasis is placed on the current curriculum on the holistic perception of artistic, scientific and artistic texts by students, their analysis, interpretation; developing the ability to express reflective judgments in connection with the read, to critically evaluate information in texts of various kinds and to use it to enrich personal reading experience. It is emphasized that the basic reading cognitive processes, which largely ensure the perception of the text, is finding information; formulating simple conclusions based on information; interpretation and synthesis (integration) of information; analyzing and evaluating the content of the text and how to convey it. Examples of text for teaching silent reading and orientation assignments for 9th grade students are provided to help develop reading competence
