Abstract
In the section analyzes the circumstances of getting to the Russian archives of several collections of documents of the Simon Petliura Ukrainian Library, who found themselves there as war trophies because they were confiscated by the Nazis. They contain extremely valuable sources on the history of Ukrainian political emigration of the interwar period, the activities of the Government of the Ukrainian People's Republic and its diplomatic missions. Their movement to Moscow took place without the accompanying documentation, fixation of dates, and later these collections were scattered, some parts of which were added to collections already existing in the Soviet archives, which testified to the neglect of Soviet archivists and their modern heirs by the complete disregard for the principle of «respect for the founder». Today, there is an urgent need to update the issue of returning these collections to their rightful owner – Simon Petliura Ukrainian Library – although the practical implementation of this is an extremely difficult and complex affair given the Kremlin's categorical intransigence in restitution policies.
