The article focuses on insufficient attention to the formation of the ability of younger students to edit texts in pedagogical theory and practice. The main thesis was the assertion that the formation of the ability of younger students to perceive and edit the text independently is the main task of teaching Ukrainian in the modern school. It is noted that the current methodology of teaching Ukrainian in primary school does not pay enough attention to the formation of motivation to master and use different language means during communication. Insufficient level of knowledge of textual knowledge, skills and abilities leads to the fact that students, knowing the possibilities of language, do not know how to use them. The importance of text skills in the system of meta-subject skills, their content and classification is characterized. Text skills are defined as the ability to determine the subject of a text, its title, basic thought, keywords, initial and closing sentence. The classification of textual skills presented in four groups is considered, as well as the nature and content of these teachings. The criteria of the level of development of students' text skills are described. The system of language education is analyzed, which provides for gradual, purposeful familiarization of the students with the text as a unit of speech. Editing is characterized as an important step in the work on the text. Indicators of development of text skills of students in the process of working on the text are given. Described the importance of forming skills to edit written texts; types and techniques of text editing. An analysis of a system of specially designed exercises with lexical, grammatical and stylistic editing is made, which is the main means of forming the ability to edit text. Comprehensive editing is determined to be most effective in the process of forming textual skills. The necessity of preparing the teacher to work on the formation of the ability to edit texts for younger students is substantiated. The basic types of editing are described, which are gradually mastered by the students in the process of forming skills to edit texts and groups of exercises aimed at mastering the students' methods of practical activity in detecting and correcting errors in the text.
