Abstract

The article deals with the circumstances of the stay of interned Ukrainian soldiers of the Ukrainian People's Republic Army in the Kalisz camp, who, despite all the difficulties of existence, consistently defended the national liberation slogans, remaining true to their oath and the UPR Government and enduring all the troubles of the camp. Throughout the internment (December 1920 - July 1924), the camp continued to live its own life, cultivating national and cultural values through the activities of art groups and organizations. Various educational centers continued their work in the camp, which became possible thanks to material assistance from international charitable organizations, Ukrainians from the Galician lands, deductions from the profits of the camp enterprises, and others. Thanks to the mentioned humanitarian aid, the internees were able to adapt to the new realities of living abroad, some of them - got new professions and found a job. The campers focused on caring for the needs of women and children, as well as the disabled, who were employed in the workshops set up in the camp. Throughout the interwar period, Kalisz remained the center of the military organization of Ukrainian combatants, which brought together a large number of veterans of the Ukrainian People's Republic Army, some of whom took an active part in the fight against Red Moscow during World War II.
