Abstract

The article traces that at the beginning of the XX century in Odessa there were many different humorous publications, such as: "Shpylka Hairpin", "Koleidoscope", "Komar Mosquito", "Maiak Lighthouse", "Pchiolka Bee", "Osa Wasp", "Sverchok Cricket". "Krokodil Crocodile", "Fontan Fountain", "Odesskiy listok Odessa Leaf", " Odesskie novosti Odessa News", "Bomba Bomb" and others. In humorous magazines, the events of that time were reflected in the form of bold caricatures of the authorities, cartoons of officials and various critical illustrations. They were made by young talented Odessa artists who took part in the publishing business of Odessa. The article elucidates the Odessa period of creativity of cartoonists of the beginning of the XX century: Linsky, Drizo, Fazini, Olesevich, Antonovsky, Zalyuk. Cartoonists criticize and ridicule with their drawings everything they think deserves it. Illustrations are made with original Odessa humor. Artists were able to convey the historical events and cultural atmosphere of Odessa in their ironic drawings. The study analyzes the graphic features of caricatures of Odessa artists in satirical publications of Odessa in the early XX century. Stylistic transformations of some cartoonists in a specific period of time can be traced. Each of the considered cartoonists had his unsurpassed style. Some were more fascinated by the content, others – by the form, some of the artists in the cartoons were more grotesque, others – avant-garde. The main thing is that these graphic works represent historical, artistic and cultural value. A significant number of artists who began as young illustrators of the Odessa satirical press became outstanding artists in exile. Almost all Odessa cartoonists considered in the article were ethnic Jews. In addition, it was found that they are united by several fundamental points that influenced their further work. Most of them emigrated to Paris in the 1920s due to repression during the Bolshevik rule. This often had a tragic effect on the lives of artists. Many Odessa artists of that time, representatives of the satirical genre, chose the path to Petrograd instead of difficult emigration. This opened up more opportunities for learning, communication and self-realization under the new government. But it will become very difficult for these artists to express themselves as much as possible in the totalitarian system. This emphasizes the importance of a free press for the creative implementation of the illustrator.
