Abstract

The article deals with approaches to defining the definition of populism and its characteristic features. Varieties of populism have been identified and characterized. It has been found that "leftist" populism appears in countries with economic difficulties and high social inequality, while "right" populism is characteristic of countries with severe problems of uncontrolled migration or national security. In addition, the article emphasizes that populism is the part of the electoral strategy of political forces to manipulate the electorate. It has been determined that although populism is inherent to most democratic political regimes, the greatest threat of its manifestations is seen in the states that are in the transformation stage. For such countries, it is suggested to resort to the experience of using controlled populism to prevent its negative effects in the form of socio-economic and political crises.
