Abstract

Introduction. Semantic features of the use of predicates for denotation of physical state have been studied from different points of view. However, the semantic nature of the predicates for denotation of physical state in the Old Germanic languages is still not investigated.Purpose. The article presents an attempt to distinguish the main features and semantic-syntactic peculiarities of the predicates for denotation of physical state in the Old Germanic languages. Methods. The classification of the predicates for denotation of physical state in the Old Germanic languages into macro- and micro groups was made with the help of the method of continuous sampling and statistical calculations based on criteria of usage frequency. Results. The analysis of the Old Germanic texts illustrates that the predicates of physical state, which describe physical needs and states of human life, dominate here. In the Old Germanic texts the predicates of physical state mostly implemented in the sentence models like ‘elementary simple sentence’ or ‘elementary simple extended sentence’. Thus, consideration of semantic-syntactic nature of the predicates for denotation of physical state in the Old Germanic languages provides an opportunity to distinguish two micro groups: “Needs of human body” and “Life activity of human body”. These groups are represented by such states as “Sleep”, “Hunger”, “Thirst”, “Fatigue”, “Health deterioration/improvement”, “Illness”, “Body irritation”, “Temperature perception”, “Psychophysical state”. Taking into account the subjectivity such states as “Voice phonation”, “Body movements”, “Mimic changes meaning”, “Change of eye expression” and “Transitive state (birth/death)” are distinguished. Considering the external expression of physical state much narrower spectrum of state situatems is revealed. These are “Alternation of day and night”, “Temperature changes”, “Alternation of seasons”, “External manifestation of human life”, “Optical phenomena”, “Sound gradation”, “Color designation”, “Atmospheric phenomena detection”. In particular, such features of the predicates for denotation of physical state as temporality, dynamism, phase, homogeneity and static are clarified. Originality. The originality of the research is that typology of the category of state and its center, the nucleus – the predicate of state in the Old Germanic languages, such as Gothic, Old English, Old Icelandic, Old High German and Old Saxon has not been studied so far. The predicate of state is a kind of nucleus for creation of the state process. The article emphasizes that the predicates in the Old Germanic languages are morphological expression of the category of state. Conclusion. It is to be noted that differentiation of predicate meanings is rather branched in its structure. It is caused by semantic-syntactic peculiarities of the predicate of state. Particular semantics, peculiar grammatical properties, ability to act as a constructive center of the sentence and predict quantitative and qualitative composition of its components make it possible to single out the predicates of physical state into independent predicate class. The problem of analysis of the predicates of physical state and their internal differentiation and realization in semantic-syntactic sentence structure on the material of the Old Germanic languages is seen to be relevant and promising.
