Abstract

The paper provides an overview of ideas and practices of voluntary commitments in sustainable development processes and highlights its importance at the national level. In this paper, the term “voluntary commitment” is viewed in generic context to outline the role and potential of different stakeholders and actors involved in the process of sustainable development. It addresses case studies focusing on experience of certain European countries such as Germany, France, Finland, and the Netherlands. Moreover, universities also contribute to the 17 SDGs through implementation of various educational and research initiatives. In the changeable European context, universities have proved to be influential societal actors that play a crucial role to guarantee the successful promotion of SDGs.
