Abstract
Reconstructs the activities of the head of the Joint Youth School of the Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic, General Mykola Shapoval, during his stay in the internment camps (Lancut, Wadowice, Kalisz) in 1921 - April 1923. Thanks to the financial assistance provided by the Ukrainian Public Committee (Prague), M. Shapoval was able to organize a wide range of charitable activities in the camps, providing financial and material assistance to a large number of interned soldiers. This allowed a whole group of officers to go to study in Czechoslovakia, made it possible to continue the work of several educational canters in Kalisz and Szczypiorno, and finally – simply gave some of the internees the opportunity to buy (get) the right clothes or go on a job search. In addition, thanks to the activities of public organizations founded by M. Shapoval and the enterprises opened by them, some of the internees received the opportunity to earn a living, as well as gained experience in public activities. No less important was the military-professional activity of M. Shapoval as the head of the Joint Youth School. It was his efforts during the internment that carried out the real (rather than apparent) Ukrainization of the School, which was sometimes forced to work in absolutely unfavourable conditions of chronic lack of resources, funds, and lecturers. However, thanks to the efforts of M. Shapoval, the young men of the School were provided with everything necessary for training, some of the young men – despite all the prohibitions of the command of interned troops – the head of the School allowed short trips to earn at least the minimum funds needed for intensive training in the camp. Some of the young men (those who needed it most) received additional food and material assistance from public organizations and donors, for whom the general always found the right words to join the cause of humanitarian aid to the cadets of the School. M. Shapoval always remained demanding of himself and his subordinates, had the courage to make unpopular decisions, and – most importantly – was able to create constructive values that brought public benefit to the entire camp community.
