Abstract

The article analyzes the historical context of the functioning of literary and art magazines of Ukraine since independence. Socio-political conditions have been identified that have significantly reduced the circulation of periodicals, their accessibility to a wide readership, and put magazines on the brink of survival. The author restores the chronology of the foundation of about 90 newspapers and magazines for the last thirty years. Particular attention is paid to newspapers, magazines, and online media, which have significantly influenced the development of national journalism and literary criticism: “Chetver”, “Yi”, “Literature Plus”, “Kurier Kryvbasu”, “Avzhezh!”, “Potiah’76”, “Krytyka”, “Svito-Vyd”, “SHO”, “Knyzhnyk review”, “Kyivska Rus”, “LitAkcent”, “Chitomo”, “Prostory” etc. The study examined previously established magazines that continued to be published during this period (“Berezil”, “Dzvin”, “Vsesvit”, “Dnipro”, “Vitchyzna”, “Slovo i Chas”, “Suchasnist”). These and other magazines brought together talented artists, provided a platform for discussion, published high-profile works of fiction, critical and journalistic materials. Complex analysis of the press revealed the main trends that embody the development of literary and art magazines in 1990–2020 and highlight the periods of the establishment of the largest number of new media. Particular attention is paid to the changes and challenges faced by literary and art magazines of the new millennium. The description is given to modern online magazines, which have become the basic platforms for discussing topics of literature, book publishing, writing, and analysis of the current literary process. Their main advantages are identified – efficiency in the coverage of information and accessibility for a wide range of readers. Perspective is identified for the development of literary and art magazines in the modern media space.
