Abstract

The article deals with the peculiarities of the coverage of the Ukrainian-Turkish relations in the book of memoirs «In Tsargorod» by Oleksander Lototskyi (Constantinople – until 1930 the official international name of Istanbul). The author tells about the events of 1919-1920, when he was in Turkey as a head of the diplomatic mission of the Ukrainian National Republic. The memoirs of a Ukrainian diplomat, published in Warsaw in 1939, contain valuable information about the direct activities of the Ukrainian Embassy and provide important material from its on the day-to-day work. At the same time, the research notes that O. Lototskyi critically evaluated the results of his own work in Turkey and warned the successors against repeating his mistakes. Oleksander Lototskyi was appointed Ambassador to Turkey in mid-January 1919, when the international situation was very difficult and unfavorable for Ukraine. The article points out that the author pays special attention in the memoirs to the recognition of the legitimacy of the Ukrainian state and, accordingly, the diplomatic mission, its relations with the authorities and the public of Turkey, especially with the western diplomatics and members of the business. The article provides information about the most important and actual cases at that time, which O. Lototskyi tried to solve: minimize Red Army replenishment by former Volunteer Army soldiers who were sent from Constantinople to their homeland in 1919; the return to the Motherland of captives during the First World War of Ukrainians who were in Turkey under the rule of the French and Germans; solving the problem of belonging to the Black Sea Fleet ships, some of which were in Turkish territorial waters after the war; establishment of the outreach and publishing work of the embassy. The activity of the Embassy of O. Lototskyi on the recognition independent the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by the Patriarch of Constantinople and the reasons why the question of recognition of autocephaly could not and have not been resolved are analyzed in detail. The author of the article notes that the exceptional value of the work «In Tsargorod» is provided by an extremely meticulous and convincing account of the author's personal observations and impressions, together with the use of unique documents and materials (letters, memoranda, correspondence with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, France, Britain, etc.).
