The work is devoted to the analysis of the problem of formation and development of religious education in Ukraine in the context of Western European religious educational discourse. Based on research by R. Jackson, C. Roverselli, Z. Kuburić, C. Moe, L. Bash, K. Stoeckl and M. Shakhnovych, the main approaches in defining the meaning of the concept of "religious education" are identified and the most common models of religious education in Western Europe are presented. countries. Problem zones of interaction of confessional and secular education depending on features of religious-cultural and social-political development of the Western European states are defined. In the formation of democratic societies striving for the development of a pluralistic worldview, the expansion of the sphere of religious education in secular discourse can be perceived as respect for freedom of religion, and as a violation of it, indicating the need to deconstruct the binary division of secular and confessional in education. Ukraine belongs to the secularized type of state, with the legally established separation of church and state. Therefore, in the Ukrainian educational discourse the most common is the definition of religious education in a confessional context, as an educational or professionally oriented activity that can be identical to evangelization and catechesis and carried out by religious organizations through controlled educational institutions and the media. The system of religious education also includes the doctrinal training of the clergy at various educational levels. The legislation of Ukraine provides for the possibility of establishing religious educational institutions by religious organizations for the training of clergy and ministers of other religious specialties, as well as private educational institutions and out-of-school education institutions. Secular schools also have licensed and accredited master's programs in theology. The analysis of the general confessional map of religious education in Ukraine shows the largest increase in Protestant religious schools, the quality of spiritual education prevails in Catholic and Orthodox schools. Among the problems of religious education in Ukraine, the conclusions indicate the need to increase the efficiency of the educational process in theological universities and thorough modernization of spiritual education in accordance with the social challenges of today.
