Abstract

In the Middle Ages, not only new philosophical positions were put forward, but there was a wide variety of ideas in the field of aesthetics and theology. Medieval worldview prohibits many types of bodily, sensual beauty, which generates a contradictory sense of beauty, sharpened and enhanced by awareness of its sinfulness. Thomas Aquinas develops the doctrine of the objective characteristics of the beautiful, seeing the divine source of this objectivity. According to Aquinas' teaching, it is possible to observe different degrees of beauty in everything, which can be understood and measured only by the presence of a certain limit and pattern for all objects worthy of perfection. Thomas explains the phenomenon of the availability of comprehension of aesthetic beauty for the human consciousness by the divinity of beauty. The standard is God as the personification of the integrity of being, extremely pure mind, pure creative activity and power. The conclusions emphasize that in Thomas Aquinas all celestial and terrestrial forms, natural and artificial, can be the object of aesthetic perception, but to see a beautiful thing, it is necessary that it become the object of conscious judgment. Nature reveals itself to us in its perfection, however, natural objects are impenetrable, their beauty can be appreciated only by higher knowledge, which is peculiar only to the Creator. Man is able to comprehend only the beauty of the things he has created.
