Abstract
The sacred iconography of the Ukrainian icon was formed by the traditions of the Byzantine icon-painting schools, which embodied the aesthetic and theological content of medieval art. Through a specific figurative and symbolic artistic language, sacred art not only conveyed the unique aesthetics of the Ukrainian Middle Ages, but also became a powerful means of psychological influence on public consciousness, forming the foundations of social memory. Iconography developed in certain historical, cultural and religious environments, borrowing the religious artistic practices of neighboring peoples. With the establishment of Christianity as the official religious doctrine of the Roman Empire, the icon embodies not only the sacred but mainly the ideological context, as it reflects the widespread practice in ancient tradition of pagan painting of gods and emperors. The conclusions emphasize that as a result of complex ideological contradictions the spiritual basis of Eastern Christian iconography crystallizes, which becomes an effective means of communication of retransmission of religious and cultural traditions, providing spiritual connection of past and present, formation of social memory and spiritual self-improvement of the nation.
