Abstract

The article considers the problem of self-identity in the book of literary portraits "Cursed Poets" by Paul Verlaine. The book includes essays about poets T. Corbier, A. Rimbaud, S. Mallarmé, M. Debord-Walmore, O. Ville de Lille-Adan and the author himself. The purpose of the study is to elucidate the specifics of the term "cursed poet" and to trace its use in the French artists’ description of the 70s of the XIX century, which Verlaine represented in his book of literary portraits. It is noted that until now Verlaine's book has not been translated from French; Verlaine’s perception of the selected poets’ work is subjective and presented in the spirit of Impressionist criticism. The analysis of these poets’ pieces of poetry reveals their desire for self-identity and overcoming the conflict between their own self and the world around them.
