Abstract

The article deals with the nature of the culinary discourse in Ukrainian women’s literature. The essence of a given analysis is to determine to what extent the indicated discourse is decisive for the gender role of a woman. The source material consists of literary works of three generations of authors from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century: Olena Pchilka, Lesia Ukrainka, Natalia Zabila and Iryna Wilde. Apart from the subject of gastronomy and the type of female literature of the 19th and 20th centuries, the texts are linked by the fact that their authors usually did not work in the kitchen but decided to prepare the food. They were women from educated and wealthy families who could afford literary work and cooks. The works used in the analysis were written in Ukrainian. Thanks to this, it was possible to trace the meanings given by the authors to the pictures of food, the codes of this discourse, the levels of including culinary episodes in the plot in their original form.
