The article is the first attempt to consider the food code of Ulas Samchuk’s prose, to find out its significance for understanding the ideas produced by the writer. Food, its suitability for satiety become in the writer’s prose one of the ways to evaluate both people and events. The spiritual depth of Samchuk’s characters (peasant, peasant, proletarian, representative of power) is measured by their attitude to eternal values – grain, bread, labor (“Volyn”, “Maria”, “Moroziv Farm”, “Darkness”). Lack of food (hunger) emphasizes the strategies of survival of Ukrainians in crisis situations, characterizes the mechanisms of imperial destruction of the whole nation (the novel “Maria”). The food code of U. Samchuk’s prose has different semantic loads: food symbolizes the triumph and fullness of human life; food appears as temptation or sin; in some cases, the consumption of food confirms the spiritual poverty of the community, in others - is evidence of unbridled faith in the future and the vitality of the whole nation.
