Abstract

With Ukraine’s accession to the Bologna process, the country’s system of education is bound to undergo permanent reforms; presently, curricula are being reoriented from the conventional pattern of knowledge acquisition to the new trend of forming personally and socially important skills. Hence, according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, education shifts from the lecture-based and informative dimension to the dimension of individual and personal orientation. The main types of activities for education applicants are no longer lectures and seminars but self-study which includes individual learning and creative work as its main components. That is why formation of professional competences is greatly influenced by the level of organization of individual learning at a specific higher education institution (HEI), as necessary capabilities, knowledge and skills of a future highly-qualified professional cannot be formed to the fullest extent merely under supervision of a tutor. A student has to learn how to find information independently, apply critical thinking skills and assess the information, acquire knowledge required for further activity, use the accumulated experience creatively, be able to communicate, and engage in self-development etc. This publication deals with individual learning as an important element of the educational process at HEIs. Not only does the author focus on general aspects of the problem, but also suggests various tasks for this type of activity to be used when teaching culture of professional speech, with the intention to form students’ soft skills (finding complex solutions to problems; using critical thinking; engaging in creative activity; maintaining coordination with others; forming judgments and making decisions; being able to communicate, interact, negotiate etc). The said work requires thorough preparation, in particular, development of interesting tasks intended to form competences which are urgently needed by present-day specialists. The suggested tasks envisage generalization and deepening of acquired knowledge, development of practical skills, creative abilities, moral qualities and emotional-volitional strength, abilities to use modern information and communication technologies etc
