Abstract

The study of interethnic relations through the prism of ego-documents creates an opportunity to identify dominant ethnic stereotypes, and to restore the authentic image of the “Other”. The relevance of this approach to the history of Rusyns is due to the ethno-confessional diversity of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The source base of the research is the diaries of the unfledged writer Olha Kobylianska. In Kimpolung, Bukovina, Rusyns contacted Jews, Germans, Poles and Romanians in their everyday life. The first and most frequently mentioned nation by Olha is Jews. The stereotype of the image of the Jew is revealed by his de-individualization, expressed by the semantics of collectiveness, which underlines the exclusive isolation of the nation. The fact that she was in love with the Jew and hoped for marriage did not eliminate the condemnatory connotations in the discourse about them. The image of the German in the diaries is embodied by a young man. The attractive appearance of Germans emphasizes their professionalism, culture, good breeding, intelligence and morality. In the opinion of the Bukovinian Rusyn, the “Other” from Germany is able to outshine everyone around him. The description of Poles is represented by the Serbinkys Catholic family, whose neighbourship with the Kobylianska’s family determined the homelike relationship and positive tone. The Catholic priest and officer - the personification of the nation in the diaries – in Olha’s understanding is endowed with natural beauty, classical proportions, culture, and good manners. Emotionally, a negative attitude towards Romanians is shown in the girl’s ego-narrative. Kobylianska takes the fact of their indecent behaviour as humiliation on the basis of ethnicity.
