Abstract

The paper is focused on finding out the peculiarities of emotiveness construing in the poetic texts written by John Keats. Emotiveness is regarded in the article as the category of the poetic text which presents itself as the unity of its form and content, where the content is represented by the author’s emotional images and the form – by the emotives or lexical means that mark images of emotions in texts. As far as emotiveness of the poetic text is a discreet phenomenon and thus cannot be a subject of immediate analysis, its studying is enabled through the methods of modeling in poetic texts. Thus, the model of emotiveness appears as to be a construal that consists of a number of fluctuations of different valences and intensity. Their total number forms an emotive trajectory in the poetic text. Formally, the emotive trajectory is a sine wave that graphically tracks in the text changes in distribution of emotional images or their complex experienced by the author at the moment of writing or prior to it. As the sonnet has a canonic form, it (according to R. Tsur) should be regarded as a convergent text. It means that the imagery of such a poetic text is processed by cognitive mechanisms and directed at creation of a specific focus in the text. The usage of procedures of convergent thinking (for example, analogous mappings, grouping of antonymic images within image-bearing spaces, etc.) to emotional images predetermines the formation of the model of emotiveness in a sonnet. It has been found out that the analyzed sonnets are based on the transitive model of emotiveness. Such model presupposes the development of the key emotive image towards its peak and then turning to affective zero point and transforming to the emotive image with the opposite valency, which appears to be the target emotive image in the poetic text. In the poetic texts by J. Keats, the key emotive image is represented by the image of suffering which gradually transforms to the image of the inner harmony of the persona.
