Abstract
The graphic work of the prominent Ukrainian artist Ivan Izhakevych (1864, Vyshnopоl – 1962, Kyiv), better known as a painter of the late nineteenth – first half of the twentieth century, has not yet been the subject of a separate study. It is known that the artist, who continued the search for «Ukrainian types» following the epoch-making works of Taras Shevchenko in the series «Picturesque Ukraine», for more than 20 years was engaged in the design of the leading St. Petersburg and Kiev publications. Among the issues of the periodical illustrated by him, the long-term creative search in the publishing house of the Niva magazine, which was the leading publication of the Russian Empire at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, occupies a prominent place. In addition, the artist worked for the publishing houses «Vsemirnaya illustraciya» («World Illustration») and «Jivopisnoye obozrenije» («Picturesque Review»), which were also produced in St. Petersburg. Significant in connection with the design of «Niva» by this author are scenes from the folk life of the peasants, church ethnography and rituals, motifs of folk and fairy tales by various authors, Ukrainian types. They were made in the form of hand drawings, which were then translated by full-time engravers of the publishing house into the technique of lithography on palm boards (until 1897). It is known that engravers from L. Siryakov's school served the mentioned publishing house, as well as «World Illustration». In the first period, some illustrations to the outlined magazine could contain instructions about two authors: «I. Izhakevich, engraver A. K Tolstoy» and others. From 1897, the printers of this edition began experiments with printing and began to use autotype (raster zincography) to perform illustrations for «Niva», which affected the quality of work. Since then, the illustrations in the publication have become more like black and white, as well as a color photograph from a drawing, which sometimes has a faint soft «pavolok»-shape. Therefore, the second stage in the history of design of magazines «Field» is marked by prescriptions: «from Fig. such and such». In general, today the most interesting graphic works of Ivan Izhakevich are known from the issues of 1988–1904, 1908–1917. – during the 1890s – 1910s).
