Based on a wide range of archival documents, the monograph highlights special aspects of United Youth School's functioning in camps for the interned army of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UPR) in Poland (Lancut-Wadowicy-Kalisz). During the whole period of its internment in camps, the school continued its activity despite all residential difficulties (relocations, lack of resources, funds, and premises necessary for organizing its proper functioning, etc.). Thanks to its teachers' endeavors, young men acquired deep knowledge on specific (tactics, artillery, fortification, military administration, etc.) and general disciplines (history and geography of Ukraine, military history, jurisprudence, Ukrainian and foreign languages). Importantly, its students spoke the Ukrainian language both on and off duty as a matter of principle as they struggled with a spread of Russian-language use in camps. In conditions of the school's constant underfunding, cash contributions and presents from donors (particularly, Ukrainian charity and non-governmental organizations and individuals) became almost the sole source for humanitarian aid. In general, four graduating classes of young starshynas (first sergeants) became the school's alumni (259 standard-bearers) that contributed considerably to the establishment of the UPR Army starshyna corps. Each school's alumnus had his own destiny afterward, but long-term statehood understanding of independent Ukraine's needs radically determined future lives and activity for most of them.
