With regard to the New Ukrainian School reform (NUS), which is based on the implementation of a new list of pupil’s competencies, new requirements for the teaching profession are systematized in the new professional standard. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the appropriateness of the competence dimension of the professional standard of a teacher, its structure, and opportunities to use. In this article the recommendations on professional standards of teachers from European experience have been analyzed, the list of competencies of modern teachers in the context of national education reform has been summarized, the structure of the Ukrainian professional standard, which is based on the current legal framework, has been substantiated. The typology of professional standards of a teacher has been studied, the peculiarities of its structure have been highlighted through the definition of job functions, general and professional competencies described through the relevant abilities, knowledge and skills. The combination of technical and developmental functions in the professional standard makes it possible to design the development of teachers’ competencies in the process of their growth in qualification categories. The proposed codification of the standard makes it more functional for structuring and developing on its basis the individual trajectory of professional development of teachers and relevant proposals for professional development. Different possibilities for using the professional standard have been defined in this article. In particular, among them are: the development of the corresponding educational programs of the bachelor and master degree on teacher training, the accreditation of these educational programs, self-assessment of a teacher, planning of their professional development, the estimation of their activity through voluntary external certification and mandatory in-school certification, the development of long-term and short-term teacher training courses.
