Abstract
The paper singles out the major folk sources of P. Kulish’s M. Starytsky’s prose. The authors argues that the writer’s prose works are deeply rooted in folklore: folk songs, legends, stories, incantations, colloquial expressions, poetic devices, and symbols which were then integrated into the texts on historical and contemporary topics. In the works of the both groups the importance and the role of folklore sources, forms of their usage, contamination in the artistic prosa of of P. Kulish and M. Starytsky are underlined. In the research the new level of short story comprehension in text of fiction work is proposed. The article is the first integral research of insert short stories, which have old traditions and keep their popularity in nowadays literature. In the work the corps of texts in which insert short stories have different functional destination are reflected systematically; the typology and modification of insert short stories are comprehended; the problems and prospects of research of insert short story as a poetics structure-forming factor in the modern domestic literature studies are brought up to date; the ways of short stories incorporation into the main story are systemized; the logic of artistic practices in the Ukrainian prose through the category of genre and literature device is retraced; „the text in the text” is analyzed in the aspect of structural semiotic poetics and intertextuality theory; the functional aim of short story component in the network of different artistic schools is defined; the variations of novel and short story genre interaction are emphasized.
